Abstract: This essay will discuss the different kinds of scales that are frequently used, and what can and cannot be done with them. We will also explore what absolute numbers are and how to work with them to deal with quantitative and qualitative data. From my point of view, this is the starting point for everything else in the AHP/ANP; this knowledge is crucial to understanding why and how AHP was built. Indeed, it gives the key for knowing how to deal with the data that we have to face in real-life problems.
